Breach impacts…
Prior to starting my studies this year, I’d come to the conclusion that in the majority of cases, security breaches and data loss simply weren’t having the impact on the affected companies reputations that we thought they were.
This could partially be attributed to the media - media always wants the next big thing, and writing about business struggles from old news stories isn’t quite ‘the next big thing’. So the information feed I draw my conclusions from is slightly biased. But too, its from big stories like TJ Maxx, the US Dept. of Veteran Affairs, Choicepoint, and countless others - where the breach happens, and from what we can tell, it’s business as normal. The average consumer does not care - or, in many cases, even know.
Since then, we’ve had a number of experts talk about the significant reputational damage companies are suffering from these breaches. I have not personnally been able to see how these numbers are generated, though, and I’m to be honest somewhat skeptical. One ISC author seems to be debating this themself, which means its not just me.
